What’s the difference between a Routine & a Ritual?

Some people are early risers☀️ and some people are night owls🦉. Whichever you are, it is so important to have routines and rituals both morning and night.

Routines: sequences of events that have to be done each day

Rituals: meaningful acts you look forward to that have ceremony attached to them

Routine = brushing your teeth👄
Rituals = Ethiopian coffee ceremony

I want to share Ethiopian coffee ceremony🇪🇹with you. Ethiopia holds a special place in my heart.

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony lasts from two to three hours. The lengthy ceremony involves processing the raw, unwashed coffee beans into finished cups of coffee.

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭: Fresh, aromatic grasses & flowers are spread across the floor and incense is burned. Then a round-bottomed, black clay coffeepot (known as a jebena) is filled with water and placed over hot coals.

𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝: Then you take handful of green coffee beans & carefully clean them in a heated, long-handled, wok-like pan. Then they are slowly roasted in the pan used to clean them, to the desired darkness.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝: The beans are ground. The “mortar” is a small, heavy wooden bowl called a mukecha (pronounced moo-key-cha), & the “pestle” is a wooden or metal cylinder with a blunt end, called a zenezena. The grounds are then added to the jebena.

𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐲: A tray of very small, handle-less ceramic or glass cups is arranged with the cups very close together and the coffee is poured in a single stream from about a foot above the cups.

After the first round of coffee, there are typically two additional servings. The three servings are known as abol, tona, and baraka.

The reason I share this with you is because rituals and routines are vital to avoid burnout. You need to have routine to help you stay on track, but being able to have rituals keeps you aligned with your purposes and goals. Your body has to rest and actually enjoy living and working.

Most people work so they can live, but they rarely end up taking the time to live. By adding rituals into your life, you are able to take a breath and enjoy the life you were given.
